During this Spring Training event MCJA will be addressing current correctional training topics and would like to offer early registration rates.  A free MCJA Fall Conference registration and hotel package in Ocean City, MD (11/1/17 – 11/3/17)  will be given away at the conference.

Full registration fees include training, continental breakfast, box lunch and afternoon snack.  The conference will start at 7:30 AM with a continental breakfast and end at 4:00 PM.

The conference will be held at the James N. Robey Public Safety Training Center located at 2200 Scott Wheeler Drive, Marriottsville, MD.

Participants enjoy a low registration fee of $45 for ACA/MCJA members; $55 for non-members; or $65 for on-site or after April 5th.

Director Robert L. Green, Montgomery County Department of Correction & Rehabilitation

The Justice Reinvestment Act of 2016 (JRA) was passed by both houses of the Maryland General Assembly and Governor Larry Hogan signed the JRA bill into law on May 19, 2016. The JRA seeks to reduce Maryland’s prison population and use the savings to provide for more effective treatment to offenders, before, during, and after incarceration. This is intended to reduce the likelihood of re-offending, as well as to benefit victims and families.  In this workshop, Director Green will provide an update on this legislation that will be implemented state wide this coming October.

10:30AM – 12:00PM                Promoting a Positive Work Culture in Corrections

Valorie Sanders, Ph.D. Director, Leadership & Professional Development, DPSCS

To succeed as a larger team, knowing the “bigger picture” is important.  Incorporating team-building measures to change organizational culture are exactly the type of reformation needed to address correction’s suffering staff moral and performance issues.  In this workshop, Dr. Sanders will discuss how important a positive culture in corrections promotes our public safety role.  While acknowledging the day-to-day stressors that are inherent to corrections, Dr. Sanders will present leadership strategies that will assist in promoting change and transforming a successful corrections team.

SGT Tate Safford – DOCR Gang Intelligence Unit

As many know, there is a resurgence in gang activity since the federal government cracked down on gangs over a decade ago.  Security Threat Groups (STG’s) in prisons and jails continues to be a challenge in managing correctional populations.  In this workshop, Sergeant Safford will provide an update on gang activity and its continual prevalence within our institutions.  A review of current trends, security concerns, and intelligence gathering will be discussed to provide an informative update on gangs in Maryland.

2:45PM – 3:30PM                    Psychological Impact of Traumatic Events and How to Get Through It

CPT Douglas J. Burig, Director, Intelligence Division, Pennsylvania State Police

Captain Douglas J. Burig is a 22-year veteran of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). In October 2006, Captain Burig was one of the first responders to the West Nickel Mines Amish School Shooting and was the on-scene incident commander when 10 young girls were shot.  Captain Burig will address the psychological impact of catastrophic events that personnel in the criminal justice system experience in their work and advice on how to get through it.
